Combinatorial chemistry is the dominant strategy for synthesizing large numbers of new compounds by simultaneously reacting small quantities of reagents, in all possible combinations, defined by a given reaction sequence. Reaction products are then examined by rapid screening techniques with the goal of discovering useful new compounds (potential new drugs, exotic materials, catalysts, etc.) quickly and more efficiently than was possible in the past.
Milestone's combiCHEM reactor system is designed to work with the MicroSYNTH Labstation. It offers the following features and benefits in support of combinatorial chemistry:
- The combiCHEM reactor facilitates microwave processing of reaction mixtures in a microwell plate format.
- The combiCHEM reactor accommodates 96, 48 or 24 vial formats. The glass vials are reusable or affordably disposable.
- Process single plates or two plates stacked together, expanding the capacity.
-
The combiCHEM microwell plates are made from Weflon, a proprietary microwave absorbing material. This ensures uniform absorption of microwaves and thus uniform heating (uniform reaction conditions) throughout the plate. The ability to process multiple solventless reactions at a controlled temperature is a unique feature of this reactor. - Standard vial spacing is used in the combiCHEM microwell plates to easily accommodate standard liquid handling apparatus.
- Vessels are individually sealed by an inert membrane sheet. This pressure seal allows reaction temperatures above the normal boiling point and also facilitates reactant mixing. The membrane seal is reusable or affordably disposable.
-
Unique axial rotation of the reactor fixture continuously tumbles the microwell plates. This ensures homogeneous exposure to the multimode microwave field, and provides continuous mixing of the vessel contents. - A fiber-optic temperature probe inserted in the reactor monitors the reaction temperature. Accurate temperature monitoring and precise feedback control is achieved using the easyWAVE software resulting in reproducible reaction temperature conditions, ± 1°C precision.
- Controlled reaction temperatures to 150°C are possible.
