Introduction Application Notes Literature Web Links

The first papers on the use of microwaves for synthesis reactions appeared in the open, peer-reviewed literature in 1986. Since that time, over a thousand articles have been published, numerous conferences have focused on the advance of microwave techniques, and the use of microwave processing is now the hot topic for combinatorial and parallel strategies.

Microwave enhancement can take several forms. Reaction rates can be accelerated, yields can be improved, reaction pathways can be selectively activated or suppressed. Microwaves heat things in a fundamentally different way than conventional means.

We thoroughly understand that synthetic chemistry advances because of the hard work of individual chemists and their diligent attention to the peer-reviewed literature. To help the synthetic organic chemist understand what microwave heating is and how it can be used to enhance synthetic reactions, we present the following sections.

First, we help you immerse yourself in the microwave literature by providing a comprehensive listing of recent articles from the peer-reviewed literature. Reprints of many of the listed articles are available, and we also provide e-mail links to allow you to contact the authors for direct correspondence. We encourage you to add the listed books and monographs to your personal library. They will fill in much background information that will help you to develop your understanding of microwave processing techniques.

Second, we provide you with links to several excellent web sites that can provide perspective and overviews on current thinking and research activities across disciplines. We make particular note of the site maintained by C. Oliver Kappe at the Institute of Chemistry, Karl Franzens University, Graz, Austria (http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~kappeco). The site is relevant, current and comprehensive.

Finally, we provide a list of Synthesis Application Notes that document a growing number of examples where microwave-enhanced reactions were performed in a particular Milestone labstation configuration, in one of our associated laboratories. These documents are available for immediate download.
