Microwave Extraction Saves Time
Milestone's Ethos Labstation can simultaneously process multiple samples in a matter of minutes.
Microwave assisted extraction uses closed vessels to heat the extraction solvent above its atmospheric boiling point. The elevated temperature of the solvent increases the solubility of the analyte of interest and lowers the viscosity of the solvent, allowing it to better penetrate the matrix. Higher temperatures help overcome matrix effects and accelerate the desorption and diffusion of the analyte molecules. This all leads to dramatically reduced extraction times.
For example:
Extraction of Additives from Polymers
Soxhlet - 3 to 16 hours
Microwave - 20 minutes @ 140 °C
Extraction of Fat from Meat
AOAC (Soxhlet) - 16 hours
Microwave - 25 minutes @ 100 °C
Extraction of Impurities in Food Dye
AOAC (Soxhlet) - 20 Hours
Microwave - 1 Hour @ 85 °C
