Safety

The Ethos is not a kitchen-type or a commercially modified kitchen microwave unit. The Ethos is a rugged, heavy duty professional system specifically designed for the harsh environment of the modern laboratory.

Chassis

The chassis of the Ethos oven is made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel, instead of molded plastic as found on many other units in the market. The large interior cavity and the inside of the door are plasma coated with 5 layers of PTFE applied at 350 °C to protect the interior of the unit from aggressive acids (such as HNO3, H2SO4, HCl, H3PO4, HF, etc.).

Even Heat Distribution

The microwaves are first fed into a premixing chamber. From here, a rotating diffuser evenly distributes the microwaves in the cavity. This unique design and the advanced microprocessor control ensure optimal microwave distribution in the cavity, thus preventing the localized "hot spots" that can occur in single-magnetron systems with insufficient wave mixing.

The Door

Pressure-responsive doorThe Ethos series are the safest laboratory microwave systems available. An available safety features in this new generation microwave is the patented pressure release door mechanism. Typical microwave units have a spring-release door opening mechanism, and rely on door latches housed in plastic to hold the door closed during normal operation. These latches are not ideal to withstand the force of a sudden explosion. Milestone engineers have designed a door based on the "moving wall" principle used in high pressure autoclaves. The door is mounted on spring-loaded high impact steel bars. If there is a sudden pressure increase, the door moves out a fraction of an inch to release the excess pressure, then reseals. An integrated safety switch cuts off microwave power in the event of pressure release.

Leaders in Technology

Each Ethos EZ is built to the following specs:

  • An industrial magnetron
  • 1.200 Watts installed power
  • Microwave diffuser for optimal microwave distribution and heating
  • Rapid heating of high throughput rotors
  • Fast air cooling of vessels for higher throughput
  • Convenient user centric design for easy loading of the vessels into the cavity

The Ethos EZ is equipped with an industrial magnetron. The delivered power is 1.200 Watts, that allow rapid heating of high throughput rotors. A microwave diffuser located above the microwave cavity evenly distributes microwaves throughout the cavity, preventing localized hot and cold spots.
The chassis of the Ethos EZ is made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel, not molded plastic. The cavity and the door are plasma-coated with PTFE to protect the unit. Milestone’s warranty covers the cavity coating against corrosion for 5 years!

Moreover, the Ethos EZ in built up with a shock resistant double-glass window, for easy viewing of the pressure vessels. The door opens downward and it can be used by the chemist as working platform to facilitate the loading of vessels into the microwave cavity.

Besides, the Ethos EZ is equipped with a heavy duty air flow system, placed above the microwave cavity. The air flow rapidly cools the external surfaces of the vessels. An acid-resistant flexible hose connects the exhaust fan to a fume hood, ensuring a safe working environment. Alternatively, the Milestone vessels can be cooled in a water bath, further reducing the cooling time to less than 10 minutes.
