FAQ

In many scenarios, single reaction volumes of more than 100 ml are required. Although these volumes and beyond can easily be accommodated in reflux glassware, open to atmospheric pressure conditions, there are many distinct advantages to performing reactions in a closed vessel. These advantages derive from the ability to operate at temperatures significantly above the normal boiling point of the the reaction mixtures, and to accommodate safely the corresponding elevated vapor pressures.

To address these needs, Milestone has developed the BatchSYNTH system—a dedicated labstation for scale-up of microwave-enhanced chemistry. It is equipped with a vertically-mounted high-pressure reactor with an array of advanced capabilities and safety features. In addition, the BatchSYNTH labstation can be upgraded for continuous flow operation at any time.

The BatchSYNTH reactor has a volume of 300 mL. It can operate at sustained temperatures up to 230°C, and pressures up to 30 bar, without loss of reagents or volatile fractions through evaporation. Fast cooling is performed by an internal cooling finger, and the homogeneity of the reaction mixture is ensured by a built-in magnetic stirrer. As with all Milestone synthesis reactors, temperature and pressure are monitored directly by internal probes.

In addition, the reactor is fitted with gas exchange ports, so that the chemist can create an inert atmosphere inside. Reagents can be added via additional valves, and the reaction mixture sampled, during the run.
